Watching a life

I went down to the kitchen late last night to make a glass of iced tea. Didn't turn on the overhead, just the light over the stove. It's enough when you know what you're doing.

As I was cracking the ice tray over the sink, I turned to the light and noticed something unusual: a flying insect. Its body was bright apple green, about half an inch long but maybe not that much; its wings were translucent and shone with a thousand colors. It moved up toward the light in a spiral pattern and disappeared until it moved back down and landed on a porcelain plate. It lit for a moment on a large drop of water where it faltered, struggled, then died.

Gorgeous.
